China Daily News: According to Kyodo News, the Japanese and American governments held a meeting of the "Japan-US Nuclear Energy Operation Committee" in Washington on the 19th, aimed at promoting cooperation in the nuclear energy field. The joint statement adopted at the meeting stated that both parties will strengthen cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy in developing countries and in countermeasures against the aging of nuclear power plants in Japan and the United States.

Emerging market countries such as China are vigorously constructing nuclear power plants, and some other developing countries are also planning to build new nuclear energy facilities. Japan and the United States will adopt a common position on how to ensure nuclear energy safety and prevent nuclear technology from being used to manufacture nuclear weapons.

The Operation Committee has newly established two working groups. Both parties will explore international nuclear safety regulations and talent training methods to prevent the global proliferation of nuclear power plants in third countries that focus only on low prices and disregard safety. The two countries will also study how to jointly prevent nuclear technology and nuclear fuel from being used to manufacture nuclear weapons, as well as ways to help businesses from both countries expand business opportunities in developing countries.

Both parties will engage in technical cooperation to extend the lifespan of existing old nuclear power plants in both countries. American nuclear power plants have maintained high operational efficiency without major accidents in recent years. Japan is skilled in seismic resistance technology for nuclear power plants. Both parties will promote information exchange in these advanced fields.

In order to promote the construction of new nuclear power plants in the United States, the two governments formulated the "Japan-US Joint Action Plan for Nuclear Energy" in 2007. In November last year, President Obama and Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama reached an agreement on promoting nuclear energy cooperation during their talks. The decision of this committee reflects the consensus reached at the summit talks.
